Eat Crap, Crave Crap

Junk food. We’ve all had it. We’ve all craved it. None of us can really define what it is, but you know it when you eat it. The question is, why do we eat it?

The prevalence of junk food in our diets is staggering. It seems each decade that we consume more and more of this garbage. It’s easy to see why. You have food that is super cheap, very convenient, calorie dense and tastes good. From a biological perspective, our body wants calories. Plus we are efficient (ie: lazy) by nature- we want to get the most results from the least work. So it makes sense how junk food became so popular.

But the truly damaging thing about junk food is the classic junk food craving. There this strange phenomenon that when we eat more junk food we get more frequent junk food cravings. The more you eat, the more you want to eat. And with crap food that becomes a problem.

So basically when we eat crap, we crave crap. So what can be done?

Fortunately the inverse is true: eat healthy, crave healthy. The trick to this is that transition period. That’s when things are difficult.

For anyone who has ever tried to improve your diet you know that it is difficult to eat healthy food when you are craving unhealthy food. No question about it, that is tough.

But stick with it for just one week and you’ll find those cravings subside dramatically. Once your body adjusts to the new fuel you are feeding it, your body will want more of it. And you will feel great too by the way.

If you are starting out on a journey to improve your diet, just know the first step is the hardest. Each day gets a little easier. In my experience, I was amazed at how I was actually craving healthy food and looking at candy with disgust. That was a refreshing change. But it didn’t start right away. It took a week of eating healthy before I was excited about it and felt like my body was cooperating.

Just remember that new diets are hard in the short term. But in the long term if you stop eating crap you will stop craving crap. So start eating healthy and enjoy your first kale craving!
