Is Sitting the New Smoking?
You’ve probably heard that sitting is the new smokoing. Well…is it?
I could probably just leave it right there and have a halfway decent blog post, but I think I’ll expand on this a little bit.
When I graduated college and started a desk job, I had a sitting desk. I went from walking all over campus (and everywhere really) to practically not moving throughout the day. My lifestyle became very sedentary.
But then I read about standing desks and my life was changed.
I can’t even imagine sitting down at a desk to work anymore. Standing has become so much more comfortable for me. A few tips though, since the adjustment can be a bit hard.
First, get something to raise your computer monitor. The level the desk needs to be at for your hands to type isn’t even close to where you need the monitor to avoid hurting your neck. Second, get a Gelpro mat. Your feet, ankles, knees, hips and back will thank you.
So why is a standing desk so effective? For me it keeps me invigorated. When I sit for a long time I get tired. Standing solves that for me. It also keeps me moving around the office more. Walking around is easy since I am already up. And we all know there are plenty of benefits to being active vs sedentary.
Do yourself a favor if you have a typical desk job. Go find a standing desk. Sitting all day is just no good.
